Restrainment art requires strong bold lines because they bring out fear. The lines that make the borders are called contour lines because they do outlines. Many of the figure behind bars, and in chains need to be rendered with contour lines because you need to see the total image of the figure. Contour lines have a tendency to make the figures in the restrainment art look flat. To get around this flat look I make other contour lines adjecent to the main ones. When there are many figures in a restrainment art renderings I make the contour lines come together to form unity.

The other important set of lines are the hatch lines because they offer form to the figures. Hatch lines are small strokes of lines that form a pattern that are used for shade and shadows. The shade and shadows on the figures are what give the image a three dimensional appearance. Hatch lines form a pattern like bitmaps and they are used as an element to make shading. I start my shading at the edge of the contour lines in a dark spot and work them to the full light. It is very important not to make too many hatch lines because they will make the figures too dark and ruin the restrainment art drawing.
