Description
Pen & ink figure drawing of a guillotine execution of a young gay man.
The rendering of the work of hard is carefully executed to show the fine details of the guillotine. The base of the guillotine uses vertical hatch line. However, the columns of the blade are not.
Chopping Block Delineation
The delineation of this rendering is done to look natural. No use of rulers or straight edges were employed. The drawing is done all in freehand. A basket is placed just below the victim’s head to show the impending doom that awaits him by guillotine execution. The guillotine is quick to kill. It cuts off head with accuracy and is hard. Behind the guillotine, the hangman is manning the handle of the blade awaiting the call from the warden to act. The condemned gay man is facing downward with his head ready to be chopped off and fall directly into the basket below. Victims of the guillotine are never place looking up facing the blade.
The drawing is done with contour lines to make the outline of the guillotine because they provide the shape. The guillotine is all done in contour lines because it shows the central block of the structure. Only the henchman has curved lines to his image because he is human.
Rendering Size
The guillotine in real life is much taller than the image that I have drawn. All guillotines are very tall to give the blade time and space to build up speed. The distance shown in my rendering is too short, but due to special needs to fit it into the rendering I made it shorter. Black is the color of the drawing with not red ink to show the blood of the victim on this chopping block.
Guillotine Execution Details
The size of the guillotine is small. Guillotines used for public executions are larger in scale. A large guillotine in the scene would not show the detail that is provided here.
All of the lines in the drawing are done with clarity. The are no blurry edges in the drawing because the machine is simple to render. No use of shade and shadows on the foreground were used. This is because it would take away from the clarity of the seen. The henchman in charge of the blade is standing with his head covered so no one knows who he is.
